How does Auricular Acupuncture work?
Auricular (or ear) acupuncture is a specialised complementary therapy where acupuncture points on the outer ear are treated using needles. There are over two hundred points on the outer ear that correspond to the body. The shape of the ear clearly resembles a foetus in the inverted position and the acupuncture points correspond to the various anatomical areas of the foetus. The ear is the sense organ most related to the kidney and the kidney corresponds to the life force. The external ear is the part of the body that is most unchanged since birth. Auricular acupuncture is one of the more widely used Microsystems within eastern medicine. Microsystems use one aspect of the body, for example ears, hands, head or feet, to treat conditions that are present anywhere in the body.
Auricular acupuncture works by inserting the needles at specific points related to internal body functions. Energy or Qi (pronounced CHI) moves throughout the body and can become blocked, too weak, or stagnant. Auricular Acupuncture balances this energy.
Qi also corresponds to muscle tone, improve blood circulation, improve lymph movement and improve the integrity of the skin function. Qi signifies a totality of vital function.
Common Questions:
"Will it hurt?" Some people barely feel the needle go in; others may feel a sting or a pinch which only lasts for a second. If a needle hurts during the session the therapist can adjust it or remove it for you.
"Is there a danger of infection?" No. The needles are sterile and only used once. They will be discarded in a clinical sharps bin after use.
"Is it dangerous?" No. Auricular acupuncture can only assist the body to heal itself. It is impossible to cause harm. The worst that can happen is that the wrong point gets a treatment!

Why in a group?
Yin tonification. Shared experience is a Yin approach; whereas focussed individual therapy is Yang. Before one becomes aware of it individuals receiving a treatment in a group will create a meditation like atmosphere in the treatment room.
A treatment within a group gives a stronger treatment due to the 'synergy' of the group. Synergy means the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. One could in fact receive a treatment simply by sitting in an auricular acupuncture group without needles!
Procedures for clients to follow:
a.. Avoid stimulants or being overly hungry before a treatment.
b.. Tell the auricular acupuncturist if you are pregnant, have a history of a bleeding disorder or epilepsy.
c.. Do not walk around once the needles are inserted.
d.. Do not remove your own or others needles, this must only be done by the auricular therapist for health and safety reasons.
e.. It is good to have time and space to sit quietly after a treatment to assimilate the effects. It is also good to drink water after a treatment.
